UX: The reality of commercial UX design

UX Designer = Problem solver

UX is about solving problems; it’s about organizing, economizing & communicating (Not aesthetics).

The first experience people have with your product is the most critical. It will determine whether people will continue to use the product or never use it again. People need a reason to engage and need continuous proof it is worth their time to remain engaged.

The reality of commercial UX design

  • Often user research is seen as an expense, not a benefit.

  • Most of the time surveys will be your only research; surveys do not give actual answers, what people say is not what they do.

  • Stakeholder indecision about what should be built.

  • You will encounter endless rework cycles.

  • You make many pretty pictures over and over again even though it is not UX design.

  • Stakeholders & clients won’t see your strategic value in what you are doing.

"Experience with failure is the greatest teacher you will ever have."

Rules when working on commercial UX design

Get everyone focused on value.

  • What delivers value?

  • What solves the problem?

  • Prioritize sprint work according to value.

  • Be open to change.
